Design - Necessary Things To Know
Record your work throughout the project by photographing, sketching, videotaping, or digital imaging. This not only helps you with the design process, but also provides you a record of your work as it progresses.
The following questions are ones that a homeowner needs to ask him/herself when planning a garden. The answers that you provide to the questions will guide you in the planning process.
• | Are you part of a homeowners’ association? Most homeowners’ associations have codes, covenants, and restrictions (CC&Rs). Obtain a copy to find out how they affect your garden plans.
The recently passed law in California AB1881 precludes HOAs from restricting the planting of water-conserving landscapes. |
• | Do you live out in the county? Restrictions on easements or deeded right-of-way land apply mostly to rural residents. Be aware that constructing on deeded or right-of-way property may result in having to tear it down later. Obtain a plot plan from the city or county that will show these areas on your property. |
• | Do you want to build a structure or pond in your yard? Check with your local Building Department for the permitting requirements for ponds, sheds, patios, arbors, trellis and other built landscape features. |
• | Who provides your water? If water is provided and is metered, know where the meter box is located and make sure it remains clear of planting or hardscape. |
• | This is also important for your electricity meter. |
• | If you have a well, then know where your pump and wellhead are located. Avoid planting trees or shrubs with invasive roots around the equipment. |
• | Do you have a septic system? Know the location of the tank, the main line leading to the house, and the leach field (underground pipes). Your county has guidelines for plants that would not harm your septic system. |
• | How do you plan to water your garden? An automatic irrigation system with a timer will save you countless hours of watering by hand. If you already have a system in place, check to see if it needs repairs and/or upgrading. |
• | Do you have any medical conditions (allergies to plants or insects) that should be considered? If you do have a medical condition, consult with your doctor to obtain a list of plants to avoid. |
